Personalised Olive Wood Gifts — Made in Cortona

There is a difference between a personalised gift and a customised product. The customised product exists before you arrive — it is a standard object in a standard size made by a standard process, and your involvement consists of choosing which name or message to print on it. The personalisation is a label applied to something generic.

A personalised olive wood gift from Arpi Woodworking in Cortona is not that.

It begins with a conversation about what you need — the occasion, the person, the purpose, the dimensions, the specific features you want. It continues with the selection of the actual piece of Tuscan olive wood that will become the gift — wood from the Val di Chiana or the Chianti hills, with specific grain character and natural features chosen for this piece. It ends with an object made by hand, in a workshop in the center of Cortona, that did not exist before you asked for it and will not exist again in exactly this form because the material from which it is made is itself unrepeatable.

This is what personalised means here.

What Makes Olive Wood the Right Material for a Personal Gift

The properties of olive wood make it unusually well suited to personalised gifting — not because of its beauty, though the beauty is real, but because of its specific character as a material.

Every piece is unique. No two sections of olive wood have identical grain, color, or natural features. The piece made for you will look like no other piece we have made or will make. This uniqueness is not a marketing claim — it is a physical fact of the material.

It lasts for generations. Properly cared for, an olive wood piece does not degrade in the way that softer materials degrade. It develops a patina — richer, deeper, more complex over time — but it does not deteriorate. A personalised olive wood gift given today will be in the same home, still beautiful, still functional, in thirty years.

It carries provenance. The olive trees that supply this wood grow in the Val di Chiana and the Chianti hills — some of them hundreds of years old, all of them part of an agricultural tradition that has been continuous in this landscape for millennia. A piece of this wood carries the specific geography of Tuscany inside it. That provenance is part of the gift.

It engraves extraordinarily well. The complex grain of olive wood creates a background against which laser-engraved text and designs appear with a depth and character that uniform materials cannot replicate. A name, a date, a message engraved into olive wood looks different from the same words on any other surface — richer, more permanent, more considered.

The Occasions

Personalised olive wood pieces work for a specific category of occasions — the ones where a generic gift would be inadequate and where the effort and thought that a truly personalised object represents matters to the person giving it.

Weddings: A large live-edge serving board, laser-engraved with the couple's names and wedding date, is a gift that will be in their kitchen or dining room for the rest of their lives together. Every time they use it, every time guests ask about it, the story of where it came from and who gave it is told again.

Significant anniversaries: A piece chosen for its specific beauty — extraordinary grain, a particularly striking knot filled with amber resin — with a date engraved. Not a generic anniversary gift but an object that reflects the significance of the occasion through the quality of the material and the care of the making.

Retirement: A piece that acknowledges a career and a person — a significant serving board or a set of pieces — with a message that says something specific rather than something generic. The kind of gift that a person keeps on display rather than in a cupboard.

Housewarming: A piece chosen for its functional beauty — a board that will be used daily, a set of coasters, a bowl — with the new address or a message engraved. Something that connects the person to their new home from the first day.

Corporate milestones: A significant commission for a partner, a client, or a colleague at a moment that matters — a business anniversary, a major project completion, a retirement from a long collaboration. See our guide to corporate gifting for more detail on this category.

Simply because: The best personalised gifts are sometimes given for no occasion at all — because you saw a piece of wood that reminded you of someone, or because you wanted to give something that would last, or because the person deserves an object made with care rather than selected from a catalogue.

The Options

Engraved serving boards: Our most requested personalised piece. A serving board in any of our standard sizes — from small personal boards to large statement pieces — laser-engraved with names, dates, messages, or logos. Available in single pieces or as part of a set.

Engraved coaster sets: Sets of four or six olive wood coasters, engraved with a monogram, a date, or a short message. Among the most accessible personalised pieces we make — suitable for a wide range of occasions and recipients.

Engraved wine boxes: A single-bottle or multi-bottle wine box, engraved with names, a date, or a message, containing a bottle of Tuscan wine chosen for the occasion. The box remains long after the wine is consumed. Available in formats from single bottle to six-bottle.

Engraved bowls: A round or live-edge bowl, engraved on the exterior with a name or short message. These are among our most visually striking personalised pieces — the combination of the bowl's curved form, the complexity of the olive wood grain, and the engraving produces an object of considerable beauty.

Bespoke commissions: For occasions that require something beyond our standard formats — a specific size, a specific design, a specific combination of features — we work directly with clients to create pieces that do not exist in any catalogue. See our bespoke commissions guide for the full process.

The Engraving

Every personalised piece includes laser engraving done in our Cortona workshop using the xTool S1 40W laser engraver — professional equipment capable of the precision required for fine text and detailed designs on the demanding surface of olive wood.

What you can engrave: Names, dates, dedications, short messages, signatures, monograms, logos, simple illustrations. For text engraving, we have an extensive font library — we are happy to match a specific font if you have one in mind. For logos and designs, we require a vector file for best results.

What we recommend: For a wedding gift: first names and date, or full names and date, in a clean serif font. Simple is almost always better. The beauty of the wood is the primary visual element — the engraving should enhance it, not compete with it.

For a personal message: keep it short. A single sentence, well chosen, engraved in a legible font, is more powerful than a paragraph that crowds the surface.

For a corporate piece: a clean logo, positioned with space around it, in a size that reads clearly without dominating the piece.

The process: We send a proof showing how the engraving will appear on the specific piece before any work begins. If anything needs adjustment — font, size, position, wording — we make it before engraving. We do not engrave without client approval.
