Olive Wood Wine Boxes — A Gift from Tuscany

There is a specific problem with giving wine as a gift.

The wine itself — if it is good wine, and Tuscany produces some of the finest wine in the world — is an extraordinary gift. The experience of opening a bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano or a well-aged Cortona DOC is something the recipient will remember. The wine deserves to be given in a way that reflects its quality.

A paper bag does not do this. A cardboard carrier does not do this. Even the more elaborate commercial wine gift boxes — printed cardboard, foam inserts, tissue paper — communicate something about the transaction that contradicts what the wine itself is saying.

An olive wood wine box from Cortona does something different. It communicates, before the wine is even opened, that someone made a considered choice. That the gift was thought about. That the container is itself a piece of craft — something that will remain in the home long after the wine is finished, carrying its own beauty and its own story.

Why Olive Wood

Olive wood is one of the oldest and most beautiful natural materials in the Mediterranean world. Its grain is complex and varied — no two pieces are identical — with colors ranging from pale gold through deep amber to near-black at the heartwood, often within the same board.

It is also exceptionally durable. A well-made olive wood box will last for decades — generations, if it is cared for properly. This durability is not incidental to the gift: it means the box outlasts the occasion it was given for, becoming a permanent object in the recipient's home rather than something discarded after the contents are consumed.

The olive trees that supply the wood for our boxes grow in the Val di Chiana below Cortona and in the surrounding Tuscan hills. The wood comes from pruned branches and agricultural byproduct — no tree is cut down for these boxes. This is genuinely sustainable sourcing, rooted in agricultural practice that has been happening continuously in this landscape for millennia.

The Formats

Our olive wood wine boxes are made in eight formats, designed to accommodate the full range of wine bottle sizes and gifting requirements.

Single bottle formats: A single standard bottle (750ml) presented in an olive wood box is the most versatile format — appropriate for almost any occasion, from a personal thank-you to a corporate closing gift.

Magnum format (1.5L): A Magnum box for the gift that needs to make an impression. The larger format allows for a broader board of olive wood, which means more of the grain is visible — these boxes are frequently among the most beautiful we produce.

Large format boxes (3L and 5L): For Jeroboam and Rehoboam bottles — the large-format wines given for significant celebrations and corporate events. These boxes are substantial objects in their own right.

Multi-bottle formats (2, 3, and 6 bottles): For gifting multiple bottles — a curated selection of Tuscan wines, a vertical tasting set, or a corporate gift that covers a group. The 6-bottle format is a significant piece of furniture in itself, designed to be kept as a wine storage and display object after the original bottles are consumed.

All formats are available with or without custom laser engraving — a name, a logo, a date, a message. The engraving is done in our Cortona workshop on the same equipment used for all our custom work.

The Knots and Cracks — A Signature Feature

Olive wood is not a uniform material. It has knots where branches once grew. It has cracks where the wood dried unevenly. It has mineral inclusions and color variations that are the record of a specific tree's specific life in a specific piece of Tuscan soil.

In mass-produced woodwork, these features are considered defects and the wood that contains them is discarded or concealed.

In our workshop, they are considered the most interesting parts of the material.

Significant knots and cracks in our wine boxes are filled with natural resin — clear or tinted to complement the surrounding wood — creating a surface that is smooth to the touch but visually complex. The filled knot becomes a feature rather than a flaw: a reminder that this material was once alive, that it grew in a particular way in a particular place, and that the craftsman who made this box decided to honor that rather than hide it.

No two boxes are identical. The grain, the color distribution, the location and character of any knots or cracks — these vary with every piece of wood. When you give one of our olive wood wine boxes, you are giving something that exists nowhere else in the world.

Custom Engraving

Every olive wood wine box can be laser engraved with custom text, a logo, a date, or a design.

The engraving is done in our Cortona workshop using professional equipment that allows for precision and detail not possible with traditional hand-carving. The result is clean, permanent, and — on olive wood with its complex grain — visually striking in a way that engraving on more uniform materials rarely achieves.

Common engraving requests include:

Personal gifts: A name and date. A message. A wedding date and the couple's names on a 6-bottle box that becomes a permanent piece of furniture in their home.

Corporate gifts: A company logo on a single-bottle box for client gifting. A product launch date and name on a Magnum box. A custom message from leadership on a multi-bottle set for a team celebration.

Wine producer partnerships: A winery's logo and vintage information on boxes produced in volume for their premium bottlings. This is one of our most active B2B applications — a handcrafted olive wood box from Cortona adds a layer of provenance and craft to any wine that no printed cardboard can match.

A Gift That Represents Tuscany

The combination of Tuscan wine in a Cortona olive wood box is not accidental. Both the wine and the wood come from the same landscape — the hills and valleys of southern Tuscany that have been producing both for thousands of years.

When you give this gift, you are giving Tuscany. Not a souvenir of Tuscany — not a reproduction or a representation — but two actual products of this actual land, made by the people who live here, carrying the specific character of this specific place.

This is increasingly rare in a world of generic luxury goods that could have been produced anywhere. A bottle of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano in a handcrafted olive wood box from Cortona could only have come from one place.

That specificity is the gift.
